Premier League giants, Gaborone United (GU) got a major boost on Thursday night when two companies, STC Chemicals and Zac Construction rolled out a P250,000 sponsorship for the club. The sponsorship lasts to the end of the season. Under the deal, STC is sponsoring the Reds with P180,000 (P15,000 per month) while Zac Construction will hand out P120,000 (P10,000 per month).

The sponsorship was announced at a glamorous event held at the Gaborone International Convetion Centre (GICC). Speaker after speaker congratulated the two companies on having seen it fit to come to the Reds rescue at a time when the club needed funds most. GU chairperson, Kelesitse Gilika sent the audience into laughter when he said that it was until Thursday that he believed that life starts at the age of 40. The Gaborone giants will be celebrating their 40th anniversary later this year and Gilika believes that the coming on board of STC and Zac is the start of good things to come. "I would like to thank everybody who has played a part in seeing that this club is successful over the past years. Because of the help of STC, we've been able to buy 12 players this season," he said. Gilika said that it is time they started delivering on the field.

Guest of honour and Member of Parliament for Mogoditshane Patrick Masimolole said that he is delighted that efforts by GU to attract sponsors have finally borne fruits. The MP asserted that the sponsorships come at a time when clubs are facing problems of funding. "I would like to challenge GU to ensure that these funds are used wisely as this will serve as a litmus test. The sponsorship is challenging and it is up to GU to ensure that both companies get the necessary mileage," said the MP. He told GU players that it is time for them to get positive results, as the sponsors would not like to be associated with a losing side. After spending five years in First Division soccer, GU has been struggling on their return to the Mascom Premier League two seasons ago. This season the club recruited some big names, but so far they have inexplicably failed to produce results and failed to win matches when least expected. That is why speakers at the sponsorship launch expressed hope that the club's fortunes would improve soon. Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, General Moeng Pheto, the Minister of Education Jacob Nkate, MP for Gaborone Central Dumelang Saleshando and other dignitaries, graced the occasion.
