FIFA Development Officer responsible for East and Southern Africa, Ashford Mamelodi, was on Friday treated to a dinner by Metropolitan in recognition of his contribution to the development of football in Botswana and the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) region.

A collaborative effort between Metropolitan South Africa and Metropolitan Botswana, the dinner was hosted for Dumba or Ash, as Mamelodi is known in football circles, whose career started with regional football structures in 1987 in Francistown. Since then, he has never looked back. He went through various football structures until he was employed as the first full-time chief executive officer of the Botswana Football Association (BFA) in 1993. He held the position until 2000 when he left to join the FIFA office based in Gaborone.

Mamelodi has already been rewarded for his sterling contribution to football as various football organisations have bestowed honours on him. The following are some of the organisations that have honoured him. FIFA (Centinial Order of Merit); CAF (50 years jubilee award); COSAFA (Honorary Secretary General); Zone VI; Supreme Council for Sport in Africa; Botswana government (Presidential Order of Meritorious Service). Speaking at the dinner, former BFA treasurer Pako Keokilwe said Mamelodi was simply made for football. He took the gathering down memory lane about their interactions in football. Keokilwe said Mamelodi was a farmer who never had time to visit his farm. In fact, he said, at one time he even suggested to Mamelodi that he should relocate his farm to the National Stadium because that is where he spent most of his time. "I said to him that his cattle would graze on the lawn," he said jokingly. Keokilwe said Mamelodi "shuns failure" and as such he would work until he finished his assignment.  He said as a result, whenever he needed to contact Mamelodi, it did not matter what time of the day it was because he would be readily available. "This was before the advent of the cellphones and I would always call the office, even at 3am, and I would find him in the office." During his time, Dumba was touted to be a great planner and Keokilwe mentioned some projects to support his assertions. He thanked Metropolitan for recognising Mamelodi and said such a gesture was long overdue.
