Junior Tennis Tournament Kicks-Off Today

The third edition of the Electric Junction Junior Tennis Championship kicks-off today at the Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) courts in Gaborone. The tournament will feature children aged between 10 and 18 from different regions of the country.

Speaking at a press conference last Friday, BTA president, Judge Mookodi said the tournament is used to nurture tennis talent in Botswana and to select national team players. He explained that the BTA has introduced a ranking system to gauge players' performance. He said the system is used internationally. "The more the player wins, the more points they get and this puts them in a good position at the national squad," he said.

He explained that the BTA's objective is to involve children younger than 10 years in the tournament in future.
The date of the tournament has been moved from December to August as a strategy to increase the number of participants.
"This is to ensure more athletes participate in the tournament because in December, most of them are unavailable due to the festive season," said Nelson Amanze, BTA secretary general.
