Diphoko clinches BAA half marathon

Lefika Athletics Club runner, Rapula Diphoko on Saturday won the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) 21 kilometres Half Marathon held in Metsimotlhabe on the Gaborone-Molepolole Highway.

 Diphoko ran a time of 1:05:05, beating more fancied opponents in Godiraone Nthompe and reigning Bosele Phikwe Marathon champion, Raobine Ramoseka. The two athletes from the BDF Athletics Club came close behind Diphoko with Nthompe at 1:05:39, while Ramoseka clocked 1:06:39. Finishing in fourth position was Tlholego Tsele of Selebi-Phikwe Athletics Club.  Boiphemelo Selagaboy pulled out of the race after only eight kilometres due to a knee injury. The veteran had been leading the race before the injury. Ramoseka and Nthompe  would soon assume the lead with Diphoko behind them.

Nthompe had assumed the lead at the half-hour mark followed by Ramoseka, but Diphoko came blazing on the return leg of the race from Kopong overtaking the duo 10 kilometres from the finish line and  managed to sustain the lead. After the victory, the champion said he had prepared adequately for the race. He said the terrain was also conducive as there were no steep hills to endure and that the weather was not too bad. In the women's category, Mosa Badubi of Bobonong Athletics Club surprised many, coming ahead of her much-experienced seniors Onkemetse Solotate and Joyce Tau. The teenager won both the junior and senior categories. Kealeboga Motshereganyi came first in the junior male with a time of 1:07:27 followed by Onkarabile Swimbo at 1:07:31.The race started at Emarenwe bar in Metsimotlhabe to Kopong Filling Station and finished at Metsimotlhabe.  It was used as a qualifier for the regional half marathon to be held in Mozambique next month. It is also used as a qualifier for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) half marathon to be hosted in Bulgaria on October 6. Over 60 athletes competed in the marathon.
