African softball separates from baseball

He said the process of establishing a continental softball body has already commenced. Currently, African softball was run under the same body with baseball. Morule, the vice-president of International Softball Federation (ISF) said the status quo has hampered the development of softball because it was not given the required attention. He hoped the separation of softball from baseball will lead to positive developments in the game and improve participation in events like Zone VI championships. "With the formation of the body, I think things will be relatively better because there would be close monitoring," he said. He lamented that historically, the Zone VI tournament has been poorly attended. He said that to try to involve countries that have difficulty in participation, they give them the right to host the tournament. However, he said, Botswana and South Africa, the regular participants and hosts, would always be on stand-by in case such countries fail to host.
Zambia is scheduled to host the competition this year with South Africa on stand-by. Morule said he would travel to Zambia to find out if they have all the required elements to host the competition. "If they don't have a proper team, we will move the competition to another place because it does not make sense to travel to Zambia to play the same South Africa that we always play," he said. Countries like Namibia and Lesotho have failed to host Zone VI before forcing either Botswana or South Africa to take over. In some cases, this led to the cancellation of the annual competition when the hosts change their minds at the eleventh hour.
