MISA position on proposed Media Bill still stands

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Botswana), Press Council of Botswana (PCB), Botswana Media Women Association (BOMWA) and the media fraternity in general would like to reiterate the recently adopted media stakeholders position on the looming media practitioners Bill.

Following a rushed meeting at the behest of the Minister of Communication Science and Technology on Monday (July 28), it has become imperative that the public understand that the media position still stands as it is.

The areas of contention still remain among others, the following:
* The registration of media practitioners is uncalled for and is meant to undermine freedom of expression and media freedom
* The role of the minister in the appointment of complaints and appeals committees compromise their independence
* The right to reply as captured in the Bill is too prescriptive and interferes with the editorial independence of media houses.
