Zimbabwean murder accused, Anesu Hwenjere (27) is set to go under psychiatric assessment at Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital following the state’s plea before the Extension II Magistrate Court.
Hwenjere is accused of brutally killing his cousin Victor Mashinge back in January this year by dismembering his body, cutting off his arm, leg, manhood and beheaded him before throwing his body in a pit latrine. Mashinge was eventually buried without his manhood while his other body parts were retrieved from the pit latrine. Appearing for a status update before court, state prosecutor Simon Galebonwe made an application that he be assessed if he is mentally stable or unstable. “We are making an application for an order for the accused to be submitted to a psychiatric examination at Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital as part of the trial process,” he said. Galebonwe’s application for psychiatric assessment comes after the accused person has remained timid and rigid in all court appearances since arraignment showing no emotions.
The accused has not even said anything in court nor made an application for bail when presented a chance to say something by Magistrate Kamogelo Mmesi. Further making his pleas against the accused, Galebonwe said that Hwenjere should further remain in custody, as they are not yet done with investigations. “We would also apply that the remand be extended for the accused as the matter is still under investigation,” he said.
Turning the tables to Hwenjere like on any other status update, Magistrate Mmesi asked Hwenjere if he had anything to say. Just like other previous court appearances, Hwenjere responded by simply saying ‘Nothing to say’. Taking into considerations all the applications made, the Magistrate acceded to the state’s pleas. “The court will order that the accused be taken to Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital for assessment. Case adjourned to May 26 for status update,” she ordered. The case continues.
