Zim man drowns in Thamalakane

MAUN: A 29-year-old Zimbabwean man drowned while crossing the Thamalakane river to attend a church service on Sunday.

The Zimbabwean drowned while his countryman swam to safety when the wooden boat they used to cross the Thamalakane river capsised on Sunday.

Maun police station commander, superintendent Motlhaba Ramaabya said the duo was crossing from the west side of the Thamalakane River to the east side when the accident happened.  He said they suspect that strong winds caused the boat to capsise. Ramaabya said the duo was crossing to attend a church service in Disaneng ward on the other side of the river. He explained that there were two Zimbabwean nationals in the boat and one of them who was polling the boat survived while his compatriot lost his life.  Ramaabya explained that they are still locating the deceased’s next of kin in Zimbabwe. Ramaabya called on river users to exercise due care at all times when crossing rivers. Meanwhile, Ramaabya said they are also investigating another case in which a 72-year-old woman of Xhwexwa cattlepost near Maun was found dead near her home on Saturday.  “We received a report that the woman was found motionless next to her home. “Upon arrival we took the body to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital where she was certified dead.”
