Statistics Botswana has released the 2024 ICT Household survey results which show increased use of the internet by children under the age of 15.
According to the survey, 45.9% of households with children under 15 who have internet access, YouTube, search engines and Tiktok are the most popular platforms.
On the downside, television ownership dropped to 54.8% from 60.3% in 2014 while radio ownership dropped to 51.8% from 59.4%. Filling this gap would require targeted studies in Botswana of which appears not be publicly.
The results also show how much YouTube and Tiktok have impacted radio and television usage among children locally. The statistics reveal that parents and educators need to understand trends ,monitor usage thus ensuring safe and healthy digital experiences.
The survey, conducted nationwide, provides key insights into how households and individuals access and use information and communication technologies. It covers internet and telephone connectivity, computer ownership, e- commerce, e- government usage, e- skills, and protection of children online, as well as awareness and disposal of ICT e- waste.
