Wrangle erupts over Mwanawasa succession

LUSAKA: Zambia's ruling Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) is in the grip of a widening firestorm over remarks by its information secretary that the party needs to settle the succession question as soon as President Levy Mwanawasa recovers.

Ben Tetamashimba spoke as the Zambian president entered the third week in a "stable condition" in a Paris Military Hospital in France where he has been admitted after suffering a stroke while attending a special African Union (AU) Summit on the Zimbabwean crisis in the Egyptian resort of Sharma el Sheikh.

Tetamashimba was last week reported as saying that President Mwanawasa "is overworked and therefore the succession question should no longer be in abeyance". He called on the party to attend to that matter as soon as possible after the president's return.
