A 35-year-old woman has lost her life after the vehicle she was driving crashed into a University of Botswana (UB) boundary wall on Sunday morning.

The accident is being investigated by officers from the Central Police Station in Gaborone. No.3 District Traffic Officer, Superintendent Dan Moshebashebi, said the accident occurred around 4am along Tshuma Road. He explained that the woman was driving a Toyota IST from the Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino towards the UB when she lost control of the vehicle. “In the process, she drove over the University of Botswana circle and ended up hitting the wall of the university premises,” said Moshebashebi. He added that the woman was rushed to Princess Marina Hospital, where she was certified dead on arrival by the doctors. Following the crash, Moshebashebi has raised concerns about the increasing number of accidents occurring on weekends, particularly after midnight and in the early hours of the morning within the city. He bemoaned that such accidents continue to claim lives whilst leaving others with permanent injuries. “Most of these fatal accidents occur during weekends and in the early morning hours when people are driving whilst intoxicated after leaving entertainment places,” said Moshebashebi.

According to him, drinking and driving is worrisome despite ongoing police efforts to curb road accidents. He further noted that weekends often pose challenges for traffic police, as many drivers damage the city's road infrastructure, amongst other things. “On weekends, it becomes a problem because almost every morning, traffic lights in the city are hit by vehicles, whilst some drivers drive over intersections,” Moshebashebi added.

At face value, Mabeo’s response, which seeks an apology and threat of a defamation suit, might seem severe to some. But we cannot ignore the context.
