The Whistleblowers Bill is finally being debated, after it was re-tabled by the minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Eric Molale on Monday. The intention to enact the law was first announced six years ago by President Ian Khama in his State of the Nation Address.

Should Parliament pass the Bill, then whistleblowers may have to scrutinise their information before reporting the matter to either Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime, the Auditor General, Directorate of Intelligence and Security, Botswana Police service amongst others.

According to the Bill, a person who makes a disclosure alleging impropriety knowing the information to be false commits an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding P10,000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.  Again the person who unlawfully discloses, directly or indirectly, the identity of a whistleblower also commits an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding P10,000 or to a term not exceeding five years or both.
