TB fluctuates in South East District

The South East District saw a steady increase over the first three quarters of the 2015/2016 financial year where the Tuberculosis (TB) cure rate fluctuated over the same period.

The Development of South East District principal district officer, Kgomotso Keisanye told council that 89 percent of clients on TB treatment completed their course whereas the TB cure rate stood at 46 percent by the end of the third quarter.

“The TB cure rate was low as patients were reluctant to give their sputum to undergo some tests to establish the cure rate.  This therefore implies that the impact of the treatment will be unknown.  However, follow up with the concerned patients will be intensified to establish the impact of this important treatment,” Keisanye said.  Commenting on the issue, councillor Norah Nkwe asked the officer if TB patients are given enough counselling and are alerted about the danger of failing to take treatment of the disease.
