South East District on the verge of thirst

The village water supply situation in the South East District (SED) is marginal to a deficit supply based on the current demands against available sources. Even though the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has tried to put some measures in place, the demand within the Greater Gaborone area and other places remains high.

SDE Drought Household and Food Security 2015/16 assessment report reveals that challenges however still exist which hamper the continuous supply of water leading to water shortage and low pressure in the area.

“These challenges include declining available water sources. The others include Gaborone dam failure recorded in December 2014 and equipment failures along the NSC pipeline corridor and the failure of the Gaborone water treatment plant and associated pumps stations. The aged water infrastructure in the Tlokweng and Ramotswa village contributes water losses which are averaged at 15 percent and 35 percent respectively,” the report says.
