The sole survivor of a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of three family members is still fighting for her life at Princess Marina Hospital.
The four were travelling to Mandunyane village for the Christmas holidays when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Botswana Prisons Service truck on December 23. The accident occurred at Madiaela lands, between Radisele and Makoro, at around 10pm.
Confirming the incident, Palapye police station commander, Superintendent Koziba Phuluweni, said the survivor, a 23-year-old woman, is currently admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He added that the young woman is said to be in critical condition.
Phuluweni explained that the family was travelling in a Mazda Demio driven by an 18-year-old male from Gaborone, heading north. He said the collision occurred while the driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle.
“The other passengers, all males aged 23, 28 and the driver succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident,” he said.
The BPS truck driver, who was alone in the vehicle at the time, escaped the accident without injuries. Phuluweni appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially during the festive season, and to avoid reckless behaviour such as dangerous overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol.
