A senior police officer shot and injured a fellow officer from the Department of Internal Affairs at Martinsdrift Police Station yesterday morning (February 17, 2025) before fleeing the scene and later turning the gun on himself.

Details on the matter are still sketchy, as unconfirmed reports suggest that the senior cop was allegedly being investigated by officers from the Department of Internal Affairs. During the meeting, sources say the officer pulled out his gun and shot his colleague.

The police confirmed the incident through a press release from the Public Relations Unit.

“A 55-year-old senior police officer shot and injured another senior police officer at Martin's Drift Police Station using a service firearm. The officer thereafter fled the scene. The police immediately launched a manhunt for the officer whose body was subsequently discovered at Lerala village. It is suspected that the officer committed suicide using the same service firearm. Investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced,” read the statement.

The injured officer is said to be hospitalised and is in a stable condition.
