Revised policy adopted

Parliament has adopted the Revised National Policy on Research, Science, Technology and Innovation 2011, which was recently presented by the Minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology, Johnie Swartz.

Although a sizeable number of MPs supported the instrument, they felt that much needs to be done in terms of research techniques as the country lags behind when it comes to research.  The Minister of Local Government, Peter Siele, said people who farm near rivers could be assisted through research.

He said a country like Australia which has parts as dry as Botswana, produces higher sorghum yields than Gaborone, thanks to research. Kgalagadi MP Phillip Khwae suggested that the Botswana College of Agriculture be moved to Banyana Farms, saying that it occupies too much space, which could be used for residential purposes. He also appealed to Swartz to take on board women who are competent at midwifery in spite of not having been to medical school.
