A case involving Kelebelle Babantsho, the 28-year-old woman accused of murder, is approaching committal stage with prosecution indicating that the only remaining piece is the forensic affidavit.

Babantsho is accused of brutally killing her boyfriend Maatla Merakeng on April 4, 2025, at Old Naledi in Gaborone.

She was granted bail on the last mention before Extension II Magistrate Court, with the State not objecting saying enough ground had been covered with regards to the investigations with only a few items left behind.

“The matter is nearing committal and we are unable to do so now because we are still waiting for the forensic report and with that the investigations remain incomplete,” State prosecutor Happy Riddin said.

Babantsho was questioned in court about her compliance with bail conditions by presiding magistrate, Kamogelo Mmesi.

As a woman of not too many words since being arraigned, the accused responded, "Yes, I did," when asked if she was compliant.

Magistrate Mmesi then directed Babantsho to return to court on September 4, 2025, when the proceedings are expected to continue, pending the submission of the awaited forensic report.

Babantsho was granted bail after the State did not oppose it citing that she is a good candidate for bail.

The case continues on September 4 where the matter is expected to be committed to the High Court for setting of the trial dates.

As the legal process continues, all eyes remain on the next court date, when further clarity on the direction of the case is expected.

The establishment of the Education Infrastructure and Management Company Ltd (EIMC) signals that authorities are finally ready to take this problem seriously. We must commend the government for this initiative....
