'Locals work with outside syndicates to poach'

MAUN: Authorities are concerned that locals collude with cross border poaching syndicates that operate from Zambia and South Africa. The syndicates from the two countries are reportedly responsible for the rising elephant poaching in Botswana.

Maun-based Chief Wildlife Warden, Mpho Setlhogile, said their investigations had ascertained that poached elephant tusks are smuggled into the two countries.

Although he was not in a position to disclose figures, he said the rate of elephant poaching in Ngamiland is worrying.
