Former president Ian Khama has applied for a piece of land in Serowe that includes the kgotla area and his parents’ gravesite. He submitted his application to the Serowe sub landboard last month.

The piece of land that the former president is interested in is a traditional burial site for some of the Bangwato royal family members. Khama wants properties surrounding the Kgotla which includes two bedroom houses converted into houses at Khama Rhino Sanctuary, one bedroom (Mophato wa mahetsa kgang), bachelor pad, four bedrooms house at the kgotla, two rooms house and an outdoor toilet.

Overall Khama is demanding all the land and properties around the place and further claims that is part of his inheritance. However, some people in Serowe are opposed to Khama’s request for land, arguing that it is a sacred site. They feel that Khama should not be given ownership of the land.
