If Gaborone City Council (GCC) has its way, motorists in the capital city may soon start paying for parking in public lots. The council is waiting for the minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Slumber Tsogwane, to approve its plan to operate public parking bays.

The decision to operate parking bays comes after benchmarking trips to councils in other countries, in search of ways GCC can generate income for itself. Rooting for the idea, councillor for Marulamantsi, Sergeant Kgosietsile, moved a motion on Wednesday requesting the council to increase exclusive use of parking in major activity areas in the city, in lieu of parking lease rentals. He proposed that at least 50 percent of the total parking in these prime locations be leased out to companies, while the remainder is left as communal parking.

At the beginning of the GCC financial year, it was revealed that arrears stood at P107.6 million, a carry over from the previous financial years. This, in addition to the rates billing of P99.8 million for the 2015/2016 financial year, contributed to a total debt of P207.4 million.
