Gaborone City Council (GCC) yesterday rejected a motion in which Marulamantsi ward (Phase IV) councillor requested government to legalise abortion.

Instead the council advised councillor Sergeant Kgosietsile to request any Member of Parliament to table that motion in the National Assembly.

“Some of these motions do not fall under our mandate or jurisdiction. I remember that this motion was once tabled in Parliament but it did not see the light of the day,” said the acting city clerk States Kabasia.  He said the reason why the council ends up debating motions that are beyond its jurisdiction is because some councillors do not take kindly to the advice from officials. “The councillors do not like to be advised on some of their motions; only a few accept our advises. This full council is not the same as the previous ones,” he said.
