Maun: Residents of villages along the Okavango and Chobe Rivers are advised to prepare against the possibility of floods this year due to the alarming rise in river levels.

Despite the ongoing drought, local authorities in Ngamiland and Chobe have been advised by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) of the possibility of floods in the two areas this year. This follows a savingram on April 4 to regional disaster offices in Chobe and Ngamiland which advised the two districts to activate floods contingency plans. The plans include alerting villagers along the river system, identification of evacuation places, protection of water treatment plants and other critical infrastructure.

In the savingram NDMO said it received floods level alert information from the department of Water Affairs and their Namibian counterparts on the flooding of the Okavango and Zambezi rivers.
