Five councils reject their budgets

At least five councils voted against their budgets, citing harsh cutbacks from central governments, especially project development funding. Among them are the two largest local authorities - the Central District and the Southern District councils.

For 2016/17, the central government slashed most councils’ budgets, allocating just enough funds for recurrent expenditure such as salaries. Development spending suffered a great deal. The cutbacks are in line with overall tightening of expenditure, as budget revenues decline amidst an economic slowdown caused by poor global prices of economically critical export commodities.

Despite the objections, Mmegi has learnt that government has begun crediting council’s accounts with their 2016/17 funding, known as the Revenue Support Grant.
