Crime on the rise in G/West

Although overall crime has decreased over the 12 months between 2010 and 2011, Gaborone West Police Station has recorded more Penal Code offences over the first six months of 2012 than it did in the same period last year, Mmegi has established.

When addressing a workshop that was organised by Gaborone West community policing over the weekend the Commissioner of Police, Keabetswe Makgophe said; "An analysis of crime statistics over the first six months [of this year] compared to the same period last year points to the following crime trend in the Gaborone West policing area:

"House break-in increased from 221 to 249, burglary increased from 151 to 191, street robbery increased from 66 to 109 and armed robbery increased from 149 to 184." Makgophe said that only store break-ins had shown a marginal decrease - from 27 to 26. He characterised the figures as a "disturbing trend that needs urgent attention" by means of strengthening police and community collaboration.
