President Ian Khama said yesterday that Botswana has suspended all bilateral cooperation with North Korea for unacceptably "dangerous actions and threats against other countries". Speaking during a state banquet for visiting President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, Khama condemned the recent testing of nuclear weapons by North Korea.

"The testing of nuclear weapons by North Korea does not only contravene international norms and practices, but also undermines all efforts aimed at promoting international peace and security, particularly on the Korean peninsula," he said. He stated that North Korea's intransigence has relegated the country to pariah status in the eyes of many in the international community.

Khama used the opportunity to state his frustration with the ongoing war in Syria, which has claimed 70,000 lives. The UN Security Council is divided over whether military intervention should be used to resolve the impasse with Russia and China in the opposition.
