BMWU upbeat ahead of Workers Day

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) preparations for the commemoration of Workers Day, to be held at Seepapitso Senior Secondary School in Kanye, are at an advanced stage, the union has said.

BMWU vice president, Joseph Tsimako told Mmegi on Thursday that the programme will start with a demonstration by members of the union followed by speeches by different speakers. He said that they have invited Botswana National Front (BNF) president Duma Boko as the guest speaker. He pointed out that the programme is expected to end with a donation of a house to a destitute person in Motshaneng.Tsimako explained that they have invited Boko because they feel that he is an influential figure who can attend to their pleas.

He said that they have been trying to get an audience with different Cabinet ministers for a long time without success. He said that even now it is hard for the union to have a meeting with any minister. He stated that, hence, it would not make sense for the union to invite a government minister. Tsimako said some of their concerns include retrenchments by mining companies such as Majwe Mining and Mupane (Galane Gold) amongst others."We have also learnt that Tati Mining Company is in the process of closing down some of its operations and that means people are going to lose their jobs and that is a sad thing.
