BDP central committee snubs Masire

Indications are that the dissident Barata-Phathi faction will press ahead with plans to form a new party after the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) central committee snubbed peace overtures from former president Sir Ketumile Masire.

Contrary to Masire's wishes, the BDP decided on Monday to take disciplinary action against Barata-Phathi members and snub efforts to meet the faction representatives for mediation.

"The BDP central committee has resolved that disciplinary action will be taken against them and will therefore, not meet them as they are on suspension," BDP spokesperson, Comma Serema, said yesterday.
