Barata-Phathi spokesperson, Sidney Pilane, has said that there is no need for him to surrender his Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) membership card in order to show that he is no longer a member of the ruling party.

The former presidential adviser said he cannot be intimidated by BDP threats after the party gave members of Barata-Phathi an ultimatum to return the cards or face the consequences. "I stated a public intention to engage with others in the formation of a new party. By reason of that I no longer consider myself to be a member of the BDP, but I have no intention of taking the membership card to Tsholetsa House, not because I care to keep it, but I have more important things to do with my time," he said.

The lawyer stated that there is nothing in the BDP constitution that says he should give back the card to the party."In any event, there is nothing on any of the BDP instruments nor on the card itself that says the card belongs to the BDP. I paid P100 for the card and was instructed to keep it, nonetheless I do not intend to keep the card, but if they want it, they can come get it from my office. They know where my office is," he said. Last week the BDP central committee not only rejected a list of demands from the Barata-Phathi who had announced that they were forming a new party but instructed the members of the faction to surrender their BDP membership cards.
