Basket weavers catch attention of Swedes

MAUN: The plight of the Okavango Delta women who eke out a living though basket weaving has caught the attention of the Swedes. North West district boasts of talented women artists whose intricate basketry is celebrated both nationally and internationally.

In testimony of their ability, their creations are usually proudly given as presents by the Botswana government officials to the visiting dignitaries, including heads of state. The basket making skill was first brought to Botswana by Angolan refugees displaced by the civil war in their country. 

Generations of the Hambukushu women have since then honed and perfected their basket making skills in the villages of Etsha 1- 13.
