Miss Botswana organisers have shot down allegations that the unveiling of the ‘Crown of Unity’ yesterday was influenced by the public criticism over the initial crown which was awarded to the new queen, Anicia Gaothusi on March 23.

Soon after the crowning of the new queen, people took to social media, particularly Facebook to express their displeasure arguing that the crown does not meet the standards of Miss Botswana who gets to represent the country at Miss World.

Some even said that the crown does not even speak to the country that prides itself in diamonds. However, Miss Botswana spokesperson, Ambrociah Samboko remained steadfast that the new crown was not influenced by the scrutiny they received from the public. “The Crown of Unity is inspired by our reigning queen, Anicia Gaothusi who aims to be a queen that brings people together through her beauty with purpose project, Lights, which is based on primary health care and teaching Batswana about the basis of health care,” Samboko stated.

Samboko further highlighted that by the time of the crowning of the new queen on March 23, the crown was already in the works. “Anicia Gaothusi is excited and pleased as the crown she wears on her head does not only represent ‘Unity’ but resonated with the core mandate of her aim as Queen which is to be remembered as a pillar of bringing people together." The new crown was designed by Caiphus Othomile and it is said, it represents the heart of Botswana’s sun kissed land, where acacia trees stretch their arms to the sky.
