On Saturday, the Kasane Bus Rank was a beehive of activity as the Mr/Miss Culture & Heritage Botswana Pageant Trust hosted an event to celebrate its 25 years of existence.

The founder of Mr/Ms Culture & Heritage Botswana Pageant Trust, Millicent Shunda, said this year’s event was aimed at raising awareness about colon cancer while also promoting cultural exchange. The event, which was graced by different healthcare organisations sought to educate and engage the community in a meaningful way about colon cancer. Although the turnout was not as high as expected, Shunda said the occasion was still a significant step towards spreading awareness and preserving Botswana’s rich cultural heritage. “The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness about colon cancer, a disease that affects thousands of people worldwide. By focusing on this particular health issue, we aimed at educating the public about the importance of early detection and prevention. Through informative talks, pamphlets, and interactive sessions, attendees were provided with valuable knowledge about the disease, its symptoms, and available treatment options.

The event also emphasised the significance of regular screening and encouraged individuals to take proactive steps towards their health,” said Shunda. In addition to raising awareness about colon cancer, Shunda stated that the event also celebrated Botswana’s diverse cultural heritage. She said they held cultural exchange activities to showcase the country’s rich traditions, customs, and artistic expressions

. Attendees had the opportunity to witness traditional dances, music performances as the organisers invited the Kazungula and Sesubiya dancers who wore their traditional attire for the occasion. Shunda explained that the cultural exchange was aimed at fostering a sense of pride and appreciation for Botswana’s unique heritage, while also promoting unity and understanding among different communities. “To ensure the success of the event, the Mr/Miss Culture & Heritage Botswana Pageant Trust invited notable personalities and organisations to participate. Among them was Dwayne Tyree, a renowned figure from United State of America who was appointed as the event’s Patron, lending his support and influence to the cause. Chobe Marina Lodge generously provided a week-long stay for Mr Tyree, adding prestige to the event. Travel Intelligence Botswana, owned by one of the organisers, sponsored the event, further highlighting their commitment to promoting cultural heritage and health awareness.” Said Shunda.

Shunda further explained that several public health facilities such as Tebelopele, Rebaone Renal Care, Diagnofirm, Emergency Assist, and the Francistown Academic Hospital were among the organisations present. She said their participation allowed attendees to access valuable information about various health services, including renal care, diagnostics, emergency assistance, and hospital facilities. "These organisations also provided free screenings and consultations, ensuring that attendees received immediate medical attention and guidance," she added.
