The Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Lesego Chombo, last week visited Boitekanelo College for a student dialogue focused on purpose-driven living and leadership.

The session, part of the college’s ‘Thrive Tuesday’ series, drew a large number of students who were eager to engage with the minister on issues related to personal development, leadership, and resilience. Speaking to the gathered students, Chombo reflected on her journey from winning the Miss Botswana title to becoming Miss World Africa and, eventually, the youngest Member of Parliament in Botswana. She told the learners that her rise to public office wasn’t without criticism and doubt, but that it was important to remain focused and determined. “If I had allowed backlash and criticism to break me, young people would lose their place at the decision-making table,” the minister said. “I am the project that is meant to prove that you can occupy the seat at the table and do well.”

Chombo acknowledged that the stakes are higher for young people in leadership, stating that if she fails, it will be used as justification for excluding youth from key positions. She urged students to take risks and push through the fear. “Be delusional, have the nerve, the audacity to take up space,” she said. Her remarks were echoed by Boitekanelo’s Student Representative Council president, Esnath Baloi, who shared her takeaways from a prior discussion with the minister. “What stood out for me was the emphasis on doing things with purpose. It’s not just about completing tasks; it’s about understanding why you do them and being committed to that,” said Baloi. Speaking at the same event, the Director of Student Services at Boitekanelo College, Kagiso Kgakge, said the department aims to support students beyond academics by fostering an environment where they can grow holistically. “Sometimes, it’s one impactful session that can keep students focused and ready to move forward,” she said. Kgakge highlighted that Student Services includes units such as Admissions, Sports and Culture, Wellness, the Academic Register, and Alumni Services.

Micro-procurement maze demands urgent reform

Whilst celebrating milestones in inclusivity, with notably P5 billion awarded to vulnerable groups, the report sounds a 'siren' on a dangerous and growing trend: the ballooning use of micro-procurement. That this method, designed for small-scale, efficient purchases, now accounts for a staggering 25% (P8 billion) of total procurement value is not a sign of agility, but a 'red flag'. The PPRA’s warning is unequivocal and must be...
