In an industry overflowing with talent, Kagiso Calvin Mokone, better known as Calvin Kay, is carving a space uniquely his own.

The 25-year-old artist from Mochudi is captivating the audience with his smooth vocals, introspective lyrics and Hip Hop sounds. Calvin Kay shares that his passion for music began at a young age. During his junior school days, he frequently showcased his passion in talent shows where the support from his peers inspired him to pursue a music career. He reveals that he has encountered a fair share of hurdles in his musical journey. However, his passion pushed him to give depth to his artistry.

His breakthrough moment came in 2020 when his debut single, I got the fire, a heartfelt ode to self-discovery, caught the attention of music critics and fans alike, with many praising his poetic storytelling and sultry voice. In 2023, he followed up with another single, My life, which continued to showcase his versatility and soulful approach to music. Calvin Kay describes his sound as soulful storytelling and views his music as therapeutic means not only to himself but to others as well. “It is a way to give hope to those who have given up on life,” he says. He has encountered challenges along his musical journey, as an upcoming artist he lacked funds to grow his musical craft. He laments the lack of support for local music in Botswana, which he believes hinders the growth of talented artists. Despite the hurdles, his musical journey is brimming with milestones. “I was called for an interview at the RB2 station. This was around the time I dropped my first single, I got the fire. As time went by, my songs got featured on Yarona FM. I am really overwhelmed by happiness as this monumental experience has given me the recognition ever since I also got the opportunity to perform in events like the Business Expo at Kanye,” he says.
