Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Cote D’Ivoire, and Congo Brazaville are the men’s table tennis powerhouses in the ongoing Gaborone 2014 Africa Youth Games (AYG). The eight countries led their respective groups during the preliminary rounds played yesterday.

Even Kenya’s number one Peter Muturi who terrorised local players during last weekend’s Botswana open championships, was reduced into a mere school boy yesterday by Egypt’s Mamoud in Group one.  Mahmoud walloped Muturi 3-0.  The marauding Egyptian went on to hammer Namibia’s Pieter Steenkamp with the same margin.  Muturi managed to occupy the runners up position after he beat the Namibian.

Botswana’s prospect Peo Thebe earned soft points because his Tunisian opponent Kerem Ben Yahia, did not turn up for the Group 3 tie.  However, Thebe succumbed to Ghana’s Isaac Amoako.   This meant that the Ghanaian end up heading the group with Thebe taking the second position.
