The traditional informal savings system, popularly known as Motshelo or cooperatives has become an integral part of life in this country. Because of the capacity that these cooperatives have in handling huge sums of money, some banks have identified a niche in capitalise on the investment opportunity. BusinessWeek’s PAULINE DIKUELO recently attended the annual Women In Business Association (WIBA) Motshelo Tea Party and learnt how this traditional savings method, often regarded as a ‘women’s thing’ has not only transformed lives, but also turned some diligent investors into millionaires

While most people see Metshelo as short-term investment, with others considering it as middle-term investment, for those that have taken it as a long-term investment route and they have become millionaires.

This system of working in groups subscribes well to the Setswana adages of ‘kgetsi ya tsie e kgonwa ke go tshwaraganelwa’, ‘setshwarwa ke ntsa pedi gase thata’ or ‘moroto wa esi gao ele’.
