No staff loss fears at DTC

Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Botswana says it is unlikely to lose staff to other players in the market, particularly the cutting and polishing companies, in the transition period between now and when the Botswana Diamond Valuing Company will occupy a state-of-the-art building near the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in the New Year.

The building is due for completion at the end of November. New sorting technology and other systems are to be introduced at the DTC Botswana facility. Among its roles, the company is to act as a catalyst for the local downstream diamond industry, focusing on manufacturing.

Currently, the BDVC - whose mandate has been to sort and value diamonds before they are sold to DTC in London - has a staff component of about 500. Sorting accounts for 60 percent, security 10 percent, while 30 percent of the component are ancillary and support staff, says DTC Managing Director, Brian McDoland.
