From penalty shoots to synchronized sweating

Imagine staggering out of a month-long, high-octane global football bender—where you’ve subsisted entirely on sleep deprivation, questionable midnight takeaway and dramatic VAR debates—only to immediately wake up in a gymnasium watching lawn bowls.

That is the spiritual whiplash of transitioning straight from a FIFA World Cup into the Commonwealth Games. It is the sporting equivalent of rolling off a CBD party and immediately attending a very polite neighborhood Tupperware meeting. You go from tactical masterclasses on breaking down a low block to deeply analysing the aerodynamics of a lawn bowl or the raw, unadulterated intensity of competitive netball. So who came up with the idea of having Commonwealth games immediately after World Cup? What kind of thinking went into the whole process and what were they really expecting? I can imagine the Commonwealth brains trust having a meeting and agreeing in one voice ‘Yeah let’s have the Commonwealth Games immediately after the World Cup’ and another member of the hallowed committee emphatically agreeing ‘that’s a brilliant idea’.

Immediately after the euphoria of the world cup! Families have been fighting over the remote for a good month and a half and surely they cannot have another round of fights fuelled now by the Commonwealth games.
