Botswana at 60: The tandabala flavour

At 60, Botswana is that uncle who started with nothing, discovered diamonds, built a beautiful house, sent the kids to school, became the envy of the neighbourhood and now spends every family gathering reminding everyone about it.

‘Do you know what this country looked like when I was your age?’ Botswana asks. ‘We had three kilometres of road!’ ‘And one telephone!’

To be fair, Botswana has earned the right to brag. Few countries have managed to go from ‘Who?’ to ‘Respected Democracy’ as smoothly. The country has spent six decades collecting awards for stability while many of its neighbours have been busy with Madlanga-type commissions.
