Challenges of implementation of security recommendations in Africa

Professor Hubert Kinkoh is a researcher at the Institute of Security Studies who specialises on African peace and security governance.

Recently he gave an intellectually stimulating discussion on how the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) is lagging behind in implementing some vital recommendations that involve security.

Given current threats to safety and stability, Africa needs decisions that are properly drafted and funded. Kinkoh states that Africa is contending with growing threats of violent extremism, entrenched localised conflicts that intersect with organised crime, coups and democratic backsliding. This then means that the African Union (AU) has a vital role in resolving these problems. But 20 years since its inception, the continental body still struggles to implement its peace and security decisions.
