Rising abortion figures demand urgent action

Elsewhere in this edition, there is a story highlighting declining abortion cases in Palapye during the first quarter of 2026. The figures captured by the Palapye District Council should not be treated as another statistic to be filed away in a district development report.

Instead, they should serve as a warning to health authorities, community leaders, and policymakers that something is not right. According to the Palapye District Development Committee’s latest report, 130 abortion cases were recorded between April and June 2026.

On the face of it, the overall figure may represent a decline from the preceding quarter. However, going deeper into the figures, the monthly trend tells a different and more worrying story. It shows that cases rose from 30 in April to 42 in May, then sharply to 58 in June.
