World Athletics Championships coming to Africa

The World Athletics Council has awarded Nairobi, Kenya, the hosting rights for the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time the prestigious competition will be staged in Africa.

The announcement was made today by World Athletics president Seb Coe in Budapest, Hungary. The 2031 edition will be held in Munich, Germany.

Coe said the decision to award Kenya the hosting rights followed one of the strongest bidding processes in the history of the sport’s flagship event. Nairobi beat a number of other candidates, including London.
