The 1000km off-road race will open the 2025 Botswana Off-Road Racing Championship (BORRC) season in April.

The development marks the return of the 1000km long race for the first time since 2023. The race dubbed ‘Sarona Desert 1000 Challenge’ is a double header event with drivers looking to score double points in the season opener. The Sarona Desert 1000 Challenge forms rounds one and two of the 2025 BORRC, with a further four rounds to come in the six-round competition. BORRC got off to a great start in 2024 with a four-round championship. The championship is the first local off-road racing competition. Last year, it attracted drivers from neighbouring South Africa and Namibia.

For its second year, BORRC will serve the first ever local 1000km-long double header event. "The Botswana Off Road Racing Championship (BORRC) is thrilled to kick-off an exciting new season with six rounds lined up. We promise an action-packed and competitive year ahead. We are starting the season with a bang, the Sarona 1000 Desert Challenge, a double-header event marking the launch of Botswana’s very own desert race.

This milestone event sets the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable year of off-road racing,” a statement from the organisers, Cryo Motorsport Group reads. The Sarona Desert Challenge is to be held on April 11–13, just a month before the FIA and FIM World Rally-Raid Championships hit Africa's southern tip. In May, South Africa will host the World Rally Raid Championship round three with the Safari Rally. The event makes its debut in the World Championship as the Sarona Desert Challenge could create a perfect platform for drivers to test the southern Africa terrains before the round three events. From the Sarona Desert Challenge, round three will be held in June with round four in August, whilst in October there will be round five before the final sixth round takes place in November.

These undertakings were promises that Batswana would be...
