Showa non-committal on BFL chair's post

Acting chair: Showa
Acting chair: Showa

Interim Botswana Football League (BFL) board chairperson, Sipho Showa has left his options open regarding taking over the role on a substantive basis.

Showa is a non-executive director and was thrust into the role following the abrupt resignation of Peter Kesitilwe last week Monday. This followed a tense BFL Annual General Assembly in Palapye which also saw the resignation of chief executive, Bennett Mamelodi. Mamelodi is serving a 30-day notice before he vacates office, with the league advertising his position last week. The position of BFL board chairperson was also advertised, with the jostling for the position expected to intensify. The board chairperson must be non-aligned and be part of the 16 shareholders who represent all the FNB Premiership. Showa came in as a non-executive director at the beginning of last season.

He told MmegiSport that his focus is to steer the ship from the present murky waters. "My current focus as interim chairman is to help the BFL navigate present circumstances with the support of the board and shareholders so that the league starts on schedule in August," he said. He could not commit if he will be available to take over the reigns on a substantive basis. "There are still some days left to the invitation closing for me to think conclusively about the way forward," he said. The BFL has faced upheavals in recent years, with former chairperson, Nicholas Zakhem facing mutiny from the shareholders in 2023. However, Zakhem, together with BFL treasurer, Jagdish Shah, fought the matter in court and emerged victorious.

We have all seen the pictures and heard the stories of broken windows, unreliable water and electricity, topped by classrooms that are not fit for proper learning. The establishment of the Education Infrastructure and Management Company Ltd (EIMC) signals that authorities are finally ready to take this problem seriously. We must commend the government for this initiative....
