Shades of ‘09 emerge as Chiefs, GU clash

Title fight: GU and Chiefs have all to play for PIC: GU

Mochudi Centre Chiefs will be itching to get one over Gaborone United (GU) as the two clash in a FNB Premiership on Sunday afternoon at the BPSC Stadium.

The pair is part of a six-team assembly chasing the title as the FNB Premiership enters the final third of the campaign. Chiefs, in sixth, need to boost their title hopes with a win over fourth-placed Reds with just five points separating the two sides. The two join leaders Township Rollers, second-placed TAFIC, reigning champions, Jwaneng Galaxy and Sua Flamingoes in the 2024–2025 FNB Premiership title race. Chiefs’ coach, Pontsho Moloi was in action in 2009 in that championship decider against GU that has lingered long in the memories of the fans.

In a clash played on the final day of the season, the Reds snatched the title from the jaws of a then-on-form Magosi side. Moloi knows a win against his former employers will enhance their title charge. Since his return to Chiefs, Moloi is unbeaten in four games but the wins have been hard to come by. In four league games, Chiefs have played to three draws and secured a single win. They have conceded just once. The team’s January recruits are proving to be a good purchase with attacking midfielder, Razeen Benett opening his Chiefs’ account in a midweek draw against Jwaneng Galaxy. Moloi will face GU for the first since his departure last month. Bulgarian tactician, Dimitar Pantev, has made an impressive start to life with The Reds. Pantev secured three consecutive wins before the midweek defeat to Flamingoes.

GU has scored five goals and conceded three times. A single clean sheet would worry Pantev but he faces a side that has found the back of the net just three times since the arrival of Moloi. Pantev’s side will enter the Sunday tie with tails high as in 19 meetings between the two sides, GU has seven wins to Chiefs’ five. The Reds scored 25 goals compared to 23 with 48 goals scored over the 19 games. The last meeting between the two sides ended in a thrilling 3-2 win for GU. In other games, leaders Township Rollers take their championship quest to the Palapye Stadium where stirred-up Morupule Wanderers lie in wait on Saturday afternoon.

VTM FC and Sua Flamingoes clash at the VTM Arena while Orapa United welcome Extension Gunners at the Itekeng Stadium. On Sunday, Struggling BDF XI take on TAFIC at the Royal Aria Stadium as Matebele FC visit relegation-threatened Flamengo Santos at the BPSC Stadium. Still on Sunday, Security Systems will battle for three points against Nico United at the Royal Aria Stadium.
