Gaborone delivered a championship defined by the clock. Botswana is firmly at the centre of a record-breaking World Athletics Relays staged on African soil for the first time. Held at the National Stadium from May 2 to 3, the 2026 edition marked a milestone for both Botswana and the continent, bringing elite relay competition to Africa for the first time in front of a highly engaged home crowd.

It was the men’s 4x400m team, which produced the standout performance of the championships.

The quartet of Lee Eppie, Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori and Collen Kebinatshipi stopped the clock at 2:54.47, setting a new World Relays record and registering the second-fastest time in history, just 0.18 seconds shy of the world record held by the United States of America.
