The Botswana Football Association (BFA) needs to raise nearly P15 million to fund the Mares' preparations for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco later this year.

The women's side is due to return to Morocco for its second consecutive appearance at the finals. Whilst there has been excitement over the achievement, the BFA has to dig deep into its shallow pockets and fund the team's preparations to the tune of P14,090,570.25. This will be in addition to the Zebras' budget as the men's side also has a date with other AFCON finalists in Morocco in the tournament to be held in December. "It is historical that we, as BFA, cannot afford alone to carry the costs of preparing national teams for these continental showpieces," BFA CEO Mfolo Mfolo told MmegiSport.

"Therefore, we appeal to every citizen of the country to assist in whatever way. We appeal to the corporate and private sectors to also assist. We profusely thank FNB Botswana and Lucara for having led the way in assisting the Mares and call on other corporates to take a leaf from that," he added. Last year, FNB Botswana announced a P13.5 million three-year sponsorship deal for the Mares, meaning the national side will receive P4.5 million every year. In December, diamond company, Lucara, weighed in with P500,000 to aid the Mares' preparations for the finals.

The PPRA’s warning is unequivocal and must be...
