A win for either Ghana or Tanzania in this evening’s Group C decider will crush the Mares quarterfinal hopes at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Mares roared back into contention on last night with a late 2-1 win over Tunisia in their final Group B match. A thunderous volley from Lesego Radiakanyo and a last-minute winner by Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse handed the Mares their first win at the competition.

That result lifted the Mares to three points with a -1 goal difference, after narrow 1-0 losses to Algeria and Nigeria in the opening two games. The team sits second in the two qualifying spots reserved for the best third-placed teams across the three groups, with Senegal assured of the other spot.

Both Ghana and Tanzania head into tonight’s clash with one point apiece, having drawn one and lost one of their opening two Group C matches. A win for either side will move them to four points, which would instantly kick the Mares out of the tournament. Senegal, would finish as second the third-placed rankings with a +2 goal difference and three points. However, a draw tonight would leave both Ghana and Tanzania on two points each, a point behind the Mares crucially keeping the Mares in the top two among third-placed finishers.

Permutations A draw between Ghana and Tanzania and Botswana qualifies for the quarterfinals. A win for either side and the Mares are eliminated.

Marathe’s observations paint a picture of neglect with children left alone for...
