Table Tennis' sensation, Reneilwe Lekorwe will have the naming honours of this year's edition of Clash of Titans tournament.

The one-day series is to be held on March 29 at Babusi Hall to celebrate Lekorwe's talents. The Clash of Titans has over the years celebrated ping-pong game-changers. The first was dedicated to the departed local table tennis legend, Matshidiso Osi-Moses whilst the last edition was held to honour Boitshwarelo 'Bizo' Butale who celebrated her 25 years in the game last year. The tournament, organised by Smash Maniacs Table Tennis Club, will be a morale booster for the 13-year-old, Lekorwe.

He celebrated his 13th birthday on Thursday and Smash Maniacs' secretary-general, Matlhogonolo Tirelo, said the organisers of the Clash of Titans this year decided to acknowledge a budding player rather than a legend of the game as in the previous edition. "We came together as management and said, not that we do not have legends in our club, but we do have youngsters who are doing tremendously well and whom we see their achievements like Reneilwe Lekorwe. He has been doing well since his first game and has held on the top-ranked junior player place for a while. He has done well with the national team regionally and internationally. So as Smash Maniacs we are proud of him and we saw it fit to celebrate him and we hope this will give him a boost to climb to higher standards," said Tirelo. Lekorwe is the youngest player in the Smash Maniacs rooster.

He brought home a silver medal in the junior men's doubles from the South African Championship late last year. In July 2024, Lekorwe bettered Tshepiso Rebatenne's record as he became the best-performing local player in continental competitions. The youngster became the first Motswana to reach the last 16 round of a continental showpiece after his exploits at the 2024 ITTF-Africa Youth Championship held in Gaborone. This year's edition of the Clash of Titans will for the first time, have both the seniors' and juniors' singles categories. Clash of Titans is amongst the premier local table tennis tournaments and this year's edition is once again expected to attract a larger number of competitors. The winner's prize in the senior category is P2, 000, silver medallists will get P1, 200 whilst the semi-finalists will pocket P600. The juniors' champions will pocket P1, 200.

Diamond deal demands transparency

Instead, it has sparked a storm of accusations, denials, and unresolved questions about the influence of De Beers on the nation’s politics. Former president Mokgweetsi Masisi’s claims that the diamond giants bankrolled his removal to dodge taxes – and that the new Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government watered down a favourable diamond deal – are explosive matters. But without evidence, they risk becoming a toxic distraction from...
