GU, Galaxy to receive P1,4m from CAF

Botswana's representatives in CAF club competitions next season, Gaborone United and Jwaneng Galaxy will each receive $100,000 (approx. P1.4 million) as part of assistance from continental mother body, CAF.

CAF president, Patrice Motsepe announced an increase of 100 % from the $50,000 (approx. P750,000) which clubs participating in the Champions League and Confederations Cup previously received.

The move is aimed at ensuring financial stability and raising standards for clubs taking part in CAF competitions.

Motsepe announced the development during a press conference in Morocco ahead of the start of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.


GU director, Nicholas Zakhem said the cash injection is a move in the right direction.

"It is a move in the right direction to empower the less privileged leagues. A lot of countries in our continent struggle to cope with the hefty expenses to meet the desire of clubs to participate in elite competitions. I salute CAF and its president for such assistance, hence teams have no excuse not to participate in CAF competitions," he said.

Galaxy spokesperson, Tankiso Morake also welcomed the development.

"Travelling in Africa is a challenge. It's very expensive, including accommodation. Overall logistics are a challenge. Taking part in CAF competitions is very expensive, therefore, we should laud the move (to increase grants)," Morake said.

GU will represent the country in the Champions League while Galaxy are in the Confederations Cup.
